Corby is located in the county of Northamptonshire close to the market towns of Kettering, Uppingham, Oakham, Stamford and Market Harborough.
It is located just off the main east-west A14 in between Cambridge and the M1/M6 making it very well connected. It has excellent road and rail connections (e.g. 1.15 hours from St Pancras, less than 4 hours to Paris). Corby and is within an hours drive from 4 Major International airports, Stansted, Luton, Birmingham International and East Midlands Airport
The population of Corby is 56,000 (2008 estimate) and in the first quarter of this century, it is projected to double in size. 2010 figures revealed that Corby is the fastest growing town in England.
Historically, with the strong presence of ironstone ore, steel dominated the town from the 1930s to the 1970s when British Steel consolidated production elsewhere in the country; the steel industry in Corby, went into decline and the economic impact was devastating. Now, the key employment sectors are: Manufacturing, strong Food related Industry, Wholesale & Retail, Transport, Storage and Communication.
RS Components (RS), is the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc, the worlds leading high service distributor of electronics and maintenance products with operations in 32 countries. With over 1700 employees at its headquarters in Corby, it is one of the towns biggest employers.
Avon Cosmetics has its UK Contact Centre and Distribution Centre based at Corby. It employs 600 people+.
Corus Tubes is one of Europe's leading manufacturers of hot finished, cold formed welded steel tubular products (e.g. Steel for the Millennium stadium, Wembley Stadium and the Emirates Stadium) it is owned by a multi million pound global company, Tata Steel.
The fresh food industry is also big in Corby, with Solway Foods (Turnover 130m Pounds per annum), Pauley & Co Ltd, part of the Brake group- to name but a few.
To support the economic growth of the town Corby has its own Gas-Fired Power Station capable of generating 350MW situated north of the town.
Corby is supported by Tresham College of Further and Higher Education which has further campuses in Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough. The college has an annual income of over 23 million Pounds and has over 10,000 part-time and full-time learners. In September 2011 a brand New 36 million Pound campus opened in Corby at Oakley Road. Tresham is a partner of the University of Bedfordshire and University of Northampton and offers a range of professional and degree level courses.
Close to Corby are Rockingham Castle and Rockingham Motor Speedway , Deene Park, Boughton House- the English Versaillies, Althorp House home of the Spencer family and Princess Diana plus numerous other Stately Homes and Gardens.
